Seafood in a Day

In June we had a fantastic Seafood day in Orford. Peter, our guide for the morning caught crabs, lobster and even eels and some lucky people were able to take something to cook at home.

We visited the picturesque Butley Creek, home to Pinney's 50 year old smokehouse and oysterbeds. Bill Pinney dredged for oysters and talked about their lifecycle. At the smokehouse we saw Pinney's unique smoking method using whole oak logs.

Finally we had had fun carving a whole smoked salmon and opening oysters before a delicious seafood lunch at Butley Orford Oysterage. You can read a review of the day on British Larder.

There are only a couple of places left on Seafood in a Day 12 September at Pinney's of Orford, near Woodbridge, Suffolk. £150/person or £250/couple.

Or join a half-day Smokehouse Tour on 14 November £45/person.

Hedgerows and Mushrooms

This autumn we've got two Wild Food Events on the private Henham Park estate, near Southwold. On September 19th our focus will be on hedgerows and we will find berries, other fruit and nuts. While on October 24th we will be joined by Valerie Jordan, co-founder of the Tasty Mushroom Partnership, who will show us how to identify, pick and prepare the best mushrooms for the kitchen.

Over a gourmet wild food lunch at The Anchor at Walberswick, Jacky and Valerie will share some of their secrets of how to turn our finds into delicious meals and healthy snacks for you and your family.

Two Wild Meat in Day events will take place this autumn. The first focuses on venison butchery, the second on feathered and furred game. We'll be in the expert hands of Robert Gooch and Ray Kent of the Wild Meat Company.

Suffolk's famous pigs

If you caught the Hairy Bikers' trip to Suffolk on TV this month you'll have seen Jimmy Butler and his free range pigs at Blythburgh, in one of their frequent TV appearances. If you'd like to meet some of the pigs yourself and learn more about the why Blythburgh Free Range produces the best pork used by many top chefs, including Heston Blumenthal, then come along on Pig in a Day on October 11.

After the guided farm tour we'll watch a traditional Suffolk butcher breakdown the pork carcass, before we get hands-on making sausages and charcuterie. As always we'll wrap up the day with a gastronomic pork feast.
