Welcome to Food Safari's first newsletter
October 29th 2008
Food Safari is a new venture which connects food and drink lovers with the dedicated and inspiring people who produce it. Based in Suffolk, we run a year-round programme of events around Suffolk’s unique network of food heroes. You will hear the fascinating stories behind the products, learn more about how they are produced and even take part in hands-on workshops
After our first successful event in September, we’re gearing up for a full programme of food and drink experiences in 2009, that will include demonstrations and workshops in preparing and cooking game, bread-making, brewing, and wild food foraging We’ll be working with some of Suffolk’s best loved producers including The Wild Meat Company, Emmett’s of Peasenhall and Alice and John’s Organic Flour.
If you can’t wait until next year, why not join us at Grain Brewery on Sunday, November 23rd or Alde Valley Lamb for a winter farm walk and cookery demonstration on Sunday, December 7th. Full details below.
Please forward this email to any friends you think would be interested and to subscribe to future newsletters click here.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon.

Barley to Beer
Tour and tasting at Grain Brewery
Sunday November 23rd, 10.30 – 2.00
Behind the scenes of one of East Anglia’s most innovative breweries
Grain are a new and dynamic young company with a passion for beer but none of the heavy going real ale baggage. Spend the day with Grain's founders and brewers Phil and Geoff and you'll find out about the whole brewing process, the ingredients and where they come from; the difference between a wheat beer and a pale ales and of course the opportunity to taste the results. Grain is located in the old dairy buildings of South Farm, in the Waveney Valley and sources all its main ingredients from the local area.
This day is designed to be of interest to anyone interested in East Anglian food and drink – as much as to fully signed up CAMRA members!
After a welcome coffee and croissants, Phil and Geoff will guide us around the brewhouse and cellar. You’ll get to see the brewing process in action and will event get the chance to try some things out - like testing the gravity of the beer; and sampling the 'wort' (unfermented beer) as it runs into the underback. Food Safari events aim to give people a truly hands-on experience of East Anglian food and drink.
We’ll eat a leisurely lunch in the brewhouse and combine it with a tutored tasting and explore how to match beer with food. With the variety of flavours derived from different hop strains and ingredients, different beers are able to contrast and complement a range of different tastes and dishes. Phil and Geoff will guide you through some of the best pairings.
You’ll leave the day with a your own beer menu and tasting notes as well as couple of complementary bottles with your own personalised label to share at home with family and friends.

Alde Valley Food Adventures
Sunday December 7th 2008, 2.00pm
Winter Walk and Cookery Demonstration
Join Food Safari for a winter farm walk and feast. You will discover the source of the well-known Alde Valley Lamb, hear how it was reared and how it reached your plate. We’ll warm up around an inspiring cookery demonstration using Alde Valley Lamb as well as vegetables from nearby organic Peakhill Farm. We will then relax over a seasonal feast.
White House was recently highly commended this year's Future of Farming Awards and has been the venue for Channel 4’s Wild Gourmets, Tommi Miers and Guy Grieves.
The Alde Valley is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the East of England. A wintery farm walk will show you why livestock have been an important part of the river valley landscape for many centuries, helping to keep water meadows and historic pastures grazed and productive.
Over a warming glass of mulled wine, we hope to inspire you to source the very best local produce to create seasonal recipes that will be a welcome change from traditional Christmas fare. There’ll be the chance to ask questions and even help stir a steaming pan! Once the food is prepared we’ll settle in to enjoy the results.
To book your place on either of these events call Polly on 01728 621380 or email polly@foodsafari.co.uk.
Tickets cost £40 (under 16s - £10). Places are limited so book early.
